Media Statement: Australian Camps Association Welcomes Additional Funding to Victorian Schools for Swimming and Water Safety

The Australian Camps Association (ACA) expresses our sincere appreciation for the recent announcement of additional funding for swimming and water safety education in Victorian schools, delivered through the ‘Swimming in Schools’ and ‘Water Safety in Schools’ initiatives over the next four years.

As the National Peak Body for camps and led outdoor activity providers, the ACA proudly advocates for our Members and educates communities about the critical role our sector plays in fostering the physical wellbeing, mental health, and resilience of young Victorians.

Water-based activities, from canoeing and kayaking to raft-building, swimming and snorkelling, are often a staple of the outdoor experiences offered by ACA Members across Victoria. These activities not only enhance children’s physical fitness but also teach teamwork, leadership, and confidence. However, the ability to fully participate in these enriching experiences hinges on one foundational skill: swimming.

For many primary school students, school camps are their first opportunity to engage in water-based activities. The additional funding announced by the Victorian Government ensures that more students will have access to high-quality swimming and water safety lessons, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to safely enjoy these experiences.

ACA CEO, Peter McDougall stated that “Without these essential competencies, students risk missing out on the full breadth of camp offerings, limiting their opportunity to connect with nature and grow as individuals”.

The ACA commends the Victorian Government for prioritising water safety education as part of its broader commitment to the holistic development of young people. This investment will undoubtedly save lives and enable more children to thrive in the safe and supportive environments provided by school camps and outdoor education programs.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Victorian Government to ensure every student can participate fully and safely in the diverse range of experiences that camps and led outdoor activities provide.
