Camper Briefing

A typical camper briefing you can adapt to your own venue.

Note: Where possible this briefing is to be given to campers immediately upon arrival. If this is not practical then the group leader must be given this briefing and retain a copy to inform the camper group as they arrive, or at their first meeting.
Campsite staff may conduct a site tour.

  1. Introduce self to campers and identify where you can be located – office, kitchen
  2. Identify Camp staff to group by name and description
  3. Drinking water – all drinking water is placarded. Drinking water is available in the dining room and BBQ area. Use water wisely.
  4. Sleeping accommodation – fire extinguishers, power points and smoke detectors (do not tamper with or test) and notify if faulty (faulty smoke detectors = slow beeps)
  5. Confirm catered group duty responsibilities (cleaning and dining room) serving and eating routine (clockwise rotation, table at a time), duty group required to set/clear tables. Meal times eg. 8am 12.30pm and 6pm. Camp staff are responsible for cleaning toilet areas.
  6. Identify the main buildings at the camp and identify those areas that are out of bounds or danger zones (done as part of the site tour)
    –  Workshops, sheds and out buildings
    –  Paddocks, gates/fences
    –  Residences
    –  Surrounding property
    –  Work sites
    –  Dam
  7. Specialised activity areas i.e.
    –  Low and high ropes
    –  Flying fox
    –  Giant swing
    –  Obstacle/initiative course
  8. Care of the environment
    –  national park rules apply
    –  no littering, use rubbish bins,
    –  flora and fauna are protected and do not remove,
    –  stay on tracks,
    –  stay off garden beds,
    –  beware snakes (discuss avoidance procedures).
  9. Identify location of emergency phone – office or kitchen.
  10. Define car parking areas – car parking in designated areas only, observe speed restriction and keep off grass.
  11. Care and use of activity equipment – return to storage area after use.
  12. Identify location of emergency response sheets and action
    –  emergency bell demonstrated (located front of dining room),
    –  emergency assembly area,
    –  Identify location of: emergency sheets – dining room; and fire extinguishers (emergency use only do not tamper),
    –  No smoking in buildings.
  13. Self catering groups- are responsible for cleaning, including inside amenities, and maintaining all areas in an hygienic manner, bringing own cleaning products and using only designated areas.
  14. Hazards – activity dam, specialised activity areas, uneven surfaces and embankments are identified, or other items as they affect campers from time to time.
  15. Free time – free time must be supervised, including all activities. Leader to reinforce out of bounds areas.
  16. Site tour – campers taken on tour to outline campsite boundaries, out of bounds areas and location of specialised activity areas.
  17. Discuss with leader(s)
  • Location of emergency plan and contents
  • Sun smart policy
  • Confirm user group responsibility for first aid
  • Provide details of injury, accident or illness
  • Out of hours Camp staff contact
  • Confirm ‘general conditions for hire’
  • Leader supervision when using all activities, including free time
  • Care re sleepwalkers, bed wetters and no under 9 year olds on top bunks
  • Group leaders are responsible for camper supervision at all times.
