Beaufort Wind Scale

The Beaufort Wind Scale is one of those oddity’s that still has a use because it translates a number or general description into observable detail. When the Bureau of Meteorology says ‘fresh winds’, what does that look like outside?

Admiral Beaufort devised it with earlier contributions from Daniel Defoe (yes, author of ‘Robinson Crusoe’) and it was officially adopted by the Royal Navy on Darwin’s voyage on’ The Beagle’.

This chart is derived from the Beaufort Wind Scale.
